A new skill

I've finally got round to learning foundation piecing and I'm loving it. I've recently spent Christmas money on two new wonderful books, Material Obsession and Material Obsession Two which have some beautiful quilts in modern fabrics, very inspirational! So I decided to try the "Gypsy Kisses" pattern, which is similar to the traditional double wedding ring pattern.

I decided to use my treasured Amy Butler prints, matching them with three plains, and two background plains. Having got 12 units out of the fabric I then worked out the best way to place them, a bit backwards I know, but I got a little carried away with the piecing! It is amazing the difference a camera pic makes, originally I was going for the green centre as below, but then tried the orange, and through the lens it sprang out at me, so I decided to be brave and go for orange.. not one of my favourite colours, but I'm glad I did!

My appliqué skills improved no end when I came to sew the units on to the white pieces, which was tricky, but I soon got the hang of it. I then wanted a strong colour to fill in the corners and chose brown which really makes the colours zing. I've sewn white sashing around the edge to hold the brown fabric steady, the triangles were cut on the bias so were unstable.

I'm now planning on hand-quilting it... which may take a while, so bare with me!
